Hi,

My wife booked a company called Tile Care (40 Mottram Rd, Broadbottom, Hyde, SK14 6BQ) to come and retile our bathroom. Because we booked this person to do our tiles we got 30% off at CDT in Denton when we bought our tiles. All seemed well and I was happy with this. However there were problems....

Tile Care came to my house, removed about 4 tiles, stripped the wall all the way back to the breeze block, removed the shower screen and then without saying a word packed up their tools and walked out of my door, never to be seen again.

My wife called them, no answer. I called them, got an answer and was then hung up on! I've tried calling them many times, but since the one time they answered my call they've never answered again! I called CDT and they confirmed that Tile Care had been in to collect grouting for a job, so they are obviously still working on something.

So now I'm left with a bathroom that's in a real mess. It's partly usable because we daren't get the bare wall wet and the lack of a shower screen means water goes everywhere.

This was a truely unprofessional service and if anyone's thinking of using this company I'd certainly think again.

Luckily for us no money changed hands, but we're now stuck with a ruined bathroom until we can get someone else in to do the job that Tile Care only made worse!!! >:(

I can't understand what they got out of it, did they make off with your tiles to use them elsewhere, have you notified Trading Standards?

I finally got through to someone tonight and was told that they couldn't actually do the job for the price they quoted! They were "very sorry, but someone else will have to do it".

So they started the job, realised it was a "bigger job than first quoted" and just walked out of the door leaving our bathroom as a building site state! When I said about the fact they just walked out without even saying they were doing so I got "yeah, I know, sorry about that".

Apparently the "stuff behind the tiles is crap, so the job will be bigger than at first thought and will cost more than the quote". Which is apparently why they walked out without saying a word.

Still not on, they haven't put right the damage they caused, didn't communicate with us until I chased them up for over a week and all they can say is "yeah, sorry about that".

I've had another tiler around to give a quote and apparently the problem is that 'someone' removed the tiles all the way through to the brick behind..... >:(

so the new tiler won't have the job of removing any tiles, will just plaster
before putting new ones on

There are loads more tiles to remove and the plaster or whatever is between the tiles and the brick work isn't removed all the way around, just in patches. It seems to be bumping up the price for the next person :(

I think I'd tell the company who sent them that unless they got someone to finish it you will take a photo of it and send it to the local rag, in fact invite the local rag round

...is it ok to have a 'name and shame' section on Manchester Forums, or are there legal implications ??

A letter seeking compensation backed by a Solicitor may be productive but would cost you money too !!
What sort of contract do the tiling company adhere to / ask you to agree to ?
The Citizen's Advice Bureau may be able to advise on various courses of action
Small Claims Court ?
Or, get a local builder/handyperson to patch up the damaged area, re-install the shower screen and think again !!

...thinking about the 'Lymm Net' business model of James Fox and and innapropriate comments therein regarding service provided by local businesses advertising on that portal

There may well be no such repercussions in this case .......!!

'scape-goating' will be ever popular along with dancing coconuts and wailing women !!

Quite Right !!

One's 'Filly' should be happy and smiling and not glum or downtrodden or growling frequently

A positive disposition and confident deportment are essential
If one can't find a special pedigree then a girl of good peasant stock will probably be adequate for most purposes and have good cooking and housework skills !!
