Manchester?
« on: 14:41:28, 19/04/08 »
If Berlin (Germany) is the BRAINS of Europe, Paris (France) the HEART of Europe and Barcelona the [censored] of Europe and Rome (Italy) the [censored] of Europe - is Manchester (UK) the [censored] of Europe?

Manchester should be the Breasts !!

Look at the name Mamucium :

The name MAnchester originates from the Ancient Roman name Mamucium, thought to be a Latinisation of an original Celtic name meaning "breast-like hill" from mamm- = "breast")

  8)

Manchester is the also the fastest growing UK city (it was in 2007 anyway !!)

According to Brewer's Phrase and Fable, Manchester was known to the Romany people, the travellers and tinkers alike as "Sharper's Town" or in their tongue Jinney Mengreskey gav (literally; the home of card sharps, swindler's and con-men) and the whole of Lancashire as Chohawniskey tem or "Witch's Country".  ::)

While I was researching the history of Romany peoples in Manchester Central Library, I came across an interesting reference in a book called Manchester & Its Regions (K.J. Dormer & J. H. Tallis) to the invasive species of flora during the period.
It reported as follows;

"It must be difficult to decide the manner in which an alien species has arrived. In our area for instance, it is a temptation to attribute an occurrence of Jimson Weed (Datura stramonium - aka: Thorn Apple, or Angels Trumpets) to the presence of imported cotton, but the fact that gypsies have for centuries used the seed of the plant medicinally is enough to raise an alternate suggestion".

every nation has a sad story - remember one man who rises to power to become President or suchlike and orders something like that - is just one man - not the Russian people, not Russia

The Russians seem to emulate European culture - often considering their own as inferior or barbarian - I do like russian and east european culture - but also see it's misgivings.

Russia is definitely a country to visit to find out for oneself - people I know who were employed at the UN there for about three years had a wonderful time and couldn't speak highly enough of the place.  There are downsides to everything - everywhere.

I visited Russia on an educational cruise in 1977 - Leningrad as it was called then was lovely - it's also Manchester's twin town.

He was always telling me how much better educated the average citizen there was taught in science etcetera and how the Russian people really liked their ex-KGB Putin, despite the missgivings of the West
I suppose they admired somoene who rescued a vestige of their former glory  8)
