Introduction and asking an opinion
« on: 15:58:24, 21/07/08 »
Hello. My name is Ruud. I live in Belgium right now but i'm thinking of moving to England.
I would pick Manchester to live cause i'm a big fan of united.
Before i take further action i would like to ask you people a few questions and opinions:

Do you think i will be accepted by you people? I must say i'm white, speak English very well and love England more than my own country . I'm saying this to point out i'm not that much different from you so i believe i'd fit in just fine i think.

I came to this site to meet people from Manchester before i move there so i allready know some people before i leave. I'm planning on moving over, if i can and my budget allows it, in a year or so so that leaves me with plenty of time to get to know some of you, huh?

Hoping to see you around the forum and who knows,in real life later on O0

Kind regards,Ruud

Sorry if i write mistakes but English isn't my native language.

Hi Ruud, welcome to the forum, we accept and are nice to all nationalities  :)

If you look at the What's On section on Main Boards there are forum members there who enjoy a busy nightlife in Manchester, and go to many of the events mentioned.

Only last September, Ninjaki, a young Greek girl started at Manchester University, and she didn't know anyone in Manchester - she now has made a lot of friends.
All that's necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing

There is a much higher standard of living in Belgium and a little resentment about the EEC headquarters and perceived rule and control via peculiar 'directives' from Brussels

Why would you want to move to another country just to follow a football team, I suppose it can't be the only reason....

What about work, or are you retired or a student ?

Well,i like your mentallity alot better then people in my country and i have some other personal reasons.
I am working at the moment but i could look for a job in Manchester on the internet just before i leave, huh?
That way i'll at least have some certainty concerning income.
Anyway, i haven't really made up my mind yet,i'm forming a decision through being on this forum and all.
I want a clear picture of how things in England are and especially in Manchester.
What do you mean by a higher living standard in Belgium?
You are a wealthy Western European country as well so the difference can't be that big?

Ruud, hello !!

The following gives an approximate idea of what is considered to be a minimum wage necessary to cope with a very basic life in the U.K.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7481927.stm

http://www.jrf.org.uk/knowledge/findings/socialpolicy/2244.asp

some of this is admittedly a little banal, to say the least, but quite informative nonetheless !!

A basic standard of living in Belgium can be analysed in a similar manner ?
I suppose it is difficult to compare unless you know how many people fit into or above or below the basic minimum standard of living plotted for each country

As we all know just because people think of Belgium as the heart of the EEC and rolling in diamonds (Antwerp) cakes, chocolates, beer and fabled gastronomy too this doesn't ofcourse mean everyone is earning a high wage as a consequence
I don't know if there is a minimum wage in Belgium ?

However I believe there is also a greater distribution of wealth in Belgium than in Britain, despite many years of a socialist government here in the U.K.
 :)
I suspect less Belgiums live in the lowest comparable wage band but that unemployment has been rising again lately

Anyway, you are right, the Northwest of England has some very friendly people and they are not all like the dysfunctional 'working class' or unemployed families portrayed on 'Soaps' like Shameless, Coronation Street and other TV docudrama's  8) :)
