My son says Didsbury is the best place as it is central to many areas, lots of buses into the city centre, loads of places to eat, and a nightlife on the doorstep - unlike many towns in Greater Manchester where it is as though there is a curfew in the evenings

Didsbury is just inside the M60 and 6 miles due south of Manchester's centre
