people need someone in charge to either talk about or laugh at, that brings them together, common ground - human nature is sometimes nonsensical

Hi I am moving to Manchester after just graduating from University in the USA to start my first job in the city.  I feel like I have only heard about all of the dangerous areas in Manchester that are filled with gang violence, muggings, shootings, etc.  Is everyone exaggerating or is it really that bad there?  Where should I live?  I have heard City Centre and Didsbury but I hear Didsbury even has a lot of gun and knife violence now.  I am moving to the city in 2 weeks but am honestly quite freaked out as I did not know that crime was such an issue in the city.  Someone tell me a safe area to get a place!
