The Mudlarks -vocal trio
« on: 14:57:02, 06/10/08 »
Do you remember the Mudlarks?  If my memory of 50 years ago isn't deceiving me, one of the male members had to do his national service and a Collyhurst (?) lad took his place in the group, and ended up marrying Mary Mudd.  Does anyone else remember this, and what happened to this couple?

The Mudlarks were an English pop vocal group of the late 1950s and early 1960s.

They were a family group from Luton, Bedfordshire, comprising Jeff Mudd (b.1935), Fred Mudd (b.1937, d.in Spain 2007), and Mary Mudd (b.1939). According to press releases at the time, they all had jobs at the Vauxhall motor plant in Luton, and spent their spare time singing together. In 1958 they attracted the attention of BBC disc jockey David Jacobs, who won them an appearance on the "Six-Five Special" TV show, and a recording contract with EMI's Columbia label.

The Mudlarks' first release "Mutual Admiration Society" was unsuccessful, but their second, a cover of the American novelty song "Lollipop" originally recorded by duo Ronald and Ruby, and more successfully by The Chordettes, rose to # 2 in the UK pop charts. They followed this with another UK top ten hit, a cover of The Monotones' "Book of Love". At the end of 1958, the Mudlarks were voted top British vocal group by readers of the New Musical Express. They continued to release records until 1964, but had no more hits.

Fred Mudd married Leila Williams, who was Miss Great Britain in 1957 and in 1958 co-hosted the new BBC children's programme 'Blue Peter'. Fred Mudd died in Spain in 2007.

Jeff Mudd became the compare at a place I used to go to in 1965.  The Manor Hotel in Maltby, South Yorkshire.  They used to have on the likes of Tony White and Lyn Perry.  Jeff Mudd used to sing and introduce the other acts but like everything else it was shortlived and soon fell out of fashion.

Hi
I know it’s a long time since you posted this but there is an update. Unfortunately I have just learnt that David Lane (Burgess) has passed away. He leaves his wife Mary & family.
The reason I am responding to this ‘post’ is because I am of the ‘Lane’ family from the Manchester area and have been doing my family tree for a number of years now. Have you any connection or, did you know David at all? Any info you may have would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards, Marian.

Hi, Marion

Sorry to hear that David Lane has passed away.  No, I didn't know him, but remember him as being very good looking!;  I just loved the Mudlarks group at that time.  I think that he may have belonged to St James' Church, Collyhurst, Manchester, but that may just be my memory playing tricks.  I think it was said that he and his wife lived with his wife's mother when he first got married, but that is all that I can 'remember'.  Condolences to his family.

:( Like you, I didn’t know him but read in the local (Tameside Reporter) paper that he had died. It also stated that he was a ‘former member of the Mudlarks’. His name when he died was Burgees so it looks like his mum had re-married at some point.
All my family originated from mid 1800’s from Ancoats, Hulme & Collyhurst area’s and, as I said in my previous, I am a descendent of the Ancoats Lane’s on my mums side. My dad came from Collyhurst, his name was Henry Aspray and he lived in ‘the dwellings’ with his family on Collyhurst road until he married my mum in 1942.

I am David's Grandson.
David's family name was Burgess. Lane was his stage name.

Hi David
Can I say how sorry I was to read of your grandfather’s death. Would you please pass on my condolences to your family.
I had originally thought your Grandfather was a member of the ‘Lane’ family, which no doubt you are aware I am a descendent of,  especially the connection with the Collyhurst area so I truly appreciate your taking the time to explain where the 'Lane' name had come from..
Kind regards. Marian.

To David's Grandson

I am really sorry to hear about your recent loss and hope you don't mind me contacting you.  I am the daughter of Brenda Smith, who was best friends and lived up same road/went to same school as Mary Mudd in Luton when they were younger.  They lost contact with each other when Mary became famous and my Mum would love to get back in contact with her, in fact I tried to trace Mary 2 years ago when it was my Mum's 70th birthday and we threw a surprise party for her as I was hoping to get hold off her for that but had no luck.  Anyway it is my parents golden anniversary party in September so if possible i would like to surprise my Mum by inviting Mary along to that.  If you can help me in any way please let me know I would be really grateful.  I can understand that now is not the best time to contact her with the recent loss but if you would be good enough to pass my message on when you think appropriate I would really appreciate it.

Many Thanks
Bev

So sad to hear that Dave has passed away, my condolences to his family.

Does anyone know whether Dave was the compare at the Pomona on Reddish Lane in the 80's. I used to enter the talent comps in there. The compare was a tall, nice looking man who had a lovely voice. He always ended the night by singing "The Partys Over"
He was brill!!
