???

Are you one of those people who, when asked a question that nobody knows the answer to, has a burning need to find the answer?  No?, Just me then...hmmmm.

Can anyone help me to find out why Elizabeth Slinger Road (Didsbury) is called what it is?  I've searched high and low and can't seem to find out who Elizabeth Slinger was?

Thanks for your help and hope this search doesn't do your head in like it's doing mine....

Sorry, misleading info. Just checked and Slinger does not appear on list of MPs and no longer appears as a Manchester Councillor. Bound to be something to do with Elizabeth though. Manchester has a bad habit of naming roads after people of little or no consequence.  I”ll dig a little deeper!

Found it! Elizabeth Slinger Street was originally a cul-de-sac. She was the founder of the Ellizabeth Slinger School for disabled people. Somewhere in that area is a new-ish building aptly named Elizabeth Slinger Building.

The Lancastrian School (for disabled children) is situated on that road

Sorry I am a bit late in reply. Only just joined the Forum. Elizabeth Slinger was the Headmistress of the Lancasterian School for Disabled Children. Originally on Cavendish Road, Didsbury a new school was built and the road on which it was located was named after her. I attended the school from 1950 to 1956.

I also can confirm Elizabeth Slinger was Headmistress of the Lancasterian School for Disabled Children and when they named a road after her I never drove down the road. I was amazed a person who used the disciplinary tactics Ms Slinger did on us was granted this honour by the City Council.
