Cheap accomodation in Manchester

Hello,

Coming up to Manchester on Saturday 4th to see a band. Me and about 3 other lads, just after somewhere (very) cheap and it doesn't have to be cheerful.

We usually stay in the Trafford Lodge but we are all a bit skint and after somewhere cheaper. Any recommendations? Or any hotelliers want to make me an offer!

someone (j-lo) mentioned the Premier Inn, last time i looked when i was in Manchester, there were a few for £39 per night (Britannia Hotel)

The price is too high, Celeste. £39 ... cheap .. I'll be choking on my Kellogg's Original Rice Krispies at this rate. The Youth Hostel Association have a fine place which was built in 1995. It's in a canal-side location close to the heart of the city centre. YHA offer great value for the money. Prices from:   Adult:  £ 20.95  Under 18:  £ 15.95  Valid until: 28/02/2007  That reminds me. My membership card is out of date so I must get it renewed as YHA cards get you into International and National Hostels.

There's an Independent Hostel called The Hatters, 50 Newton Street, Manchester, M1 2EA. Tel: (0161) 236 9500  Prices range from £14.50 if you have no objection to sleeping in a dormitory (sure it's only a place to put your head down for a night .. why pay hard earned cash to up market hotels?) to £25 for a private room. If you are with a group of friends you'd probably need a dormitory anyway. The money saved could be used for drink or whatever. The place has 157 beds, is open all the year and is open 24 hours round the clock.

Nowhere recently, Celeste. I used my card years ago in Northern Ireland and stopped at Newcastle Hostel and Bloody Bridge Hostel near Newcastle, Co. Down which is where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea.  Later I stayed at the Silent Valley Hostel at the other side of the Mournes. I stayed at Carnlough, Cushendall and Whitepark Bay Hostels in Co. Antrim as well as Castle Archdale in Co. Fermanagh. It was lovely sitting in the common room at Whitepark Bay on a clear day looking at Rathlin Island, and seeing Scotland very clearly.

I've used the Larne Stranraer ferry on many occasions, Celeste, although not in the past twelve years. I worked with an English travelling circus which toured Ireland on a regular basis. We travelled via Larne Stranraer and drove across Scotland to play in Edinburgh. The lorry I was driving got a broken front window when a little stone flew into the air and hit it so I'd to knock out the broken glass and drive with no window for most of the journey. Prior to working with the circus I represented a company based in Birmingham and whenever I went there for sales conferences I went via Larne Stranraer.

and do you miss the travelling life?  would you ever live anywhere else besides where you live now?

I don't miss the travelling life. I thoroughly enjoy posting messages on the net, watching the Belfast Forum membership growing and helping people trace their ancestors. It would be great to see both Belfast and Manchester Forums with a couple of thousand members instead of a couple of hundred.

Celeste, you asked how to get people to participate. I'm not sure other than asking sites to whom we've linked from here to link back to this site.  Genealogy board helps as well but then you need a couple of members who are interested in the subject. Welcoming new members probably helps a bit too.
