BEST/WORST PLACES TO LIVE - 2006
« on: 17:29:42, 27/10/06 »

Did anybody happen to tune into Channel 4's 'The Best and Worst Places to Live in the UK - 2006'?

Comparisons were made of various places in the UK according to a criteria that included the following : CRIME / ENVIRONMENT / LIFESTYLE / EMPLOYMENT / EDUCATION.

Then the places were ranked in the top 10 for the 'Best' and the 'Worst'.  For your information, here are the 10 'Worst' places to live in the UK . . .

  1)  HACKNEY
  2)  TOWER HAMLETS
  3)  MERTHYR TYDFIL
  4)  NEWHAM
  5)  ISLINGTON
  6)  MIDDLESBROUGH
  7)  NOTTINGHAM
  8)  STRABANE
  9)  BLAENAU GWENT
10)  MANCHESTER

The following are ranked as the 10 'Best' . . .

  1)  WINCHESTER
  2)  HORSHAM
  3)  TUNBRIDGE WELLS
  4)  HARROGATE
  5)  S.CAMBRIDGESHIRE
  6)  ORKNEY ISLANDS
  7)  EAST HERTFORDSHIRE
  8)  EPSOM & EWELL
  9)  EASTLEIGH
10)  DORSET

Well, what do you make of that folks?  How do you rank your area?  Do these rankings have any resemblance to ACTUALLY quality of life?  Do you agree with this criteria?

I don't know about you, but, I would like to see Manchester being distinctly absent from the list of the 'Worst' places in 2007 - has it got any chance?

Are you surprised to find 4 of the 'Worst' areas to live are in London?  I mean, Islington, of all places?!  Tony and Cherie will be crying into their pink champagne  and sun-dried cherry tomatoes !!

One more thought . . . quite a lot of the 'Best' places to live appear to be places that people go to die?  :o !?

I'm just a little disturbed . . . ( I mean, more so than usual) . . .

Maybe it's because Tone and Chez reside in Islington that it has been relegated to one of the worst places to live. :o Imagine bumping into them in the supermarket!!! :( (is there a vomiting smilie ??????)
Dorset is lovely :)

i have only been to Harrogate of all those places so it's hard to comment, but I wouldn't mind living there, very spacious, loads of floral displays, good quality shops, plenty of antique shops too, attractive houses, and BETTY'S  :)

Is anybody surprised that there are no less than 4 London authorities in the list of 'Worst' areas to live . . . hackney/tower hamlets/islington/newham?

Does anybody have any personal experience of living in these areas?

Do you think that the capital has become inhabitable? why?

I'm sure the areas in the 'Best'list will be thanking Channel 4 for adding to their lustre, however, the those occupying the top 10 in the 'Worst' section will feel obliged to rubbish the survey as being totally out of context.

Last year, Nottingham occupied the the top 'Worst' slot because of petty crime in residential areas - (its, also, swimming in guns) - and the local authority was furious with Channel 4.

Can't imagine the residents are too pleased, either.

I've forgotten it already!! :)
It must be upsetting to be told you live in one of the worst places!!
On the News I have noted 'they' are thinking of bringing in a hefty tax if you live in a nice area with low crime and good amenities etc. Rather asking for trouble I feel. Is this a ploy to persuade the 'chattering classes' to move to the Ghettos???
