GMPTE - Letting down the disabled
« on: 16:59:52, 27/08/10 »
GMPTE - have taken over the No. 20 bus from Arriva who used to carry wheelchair passengers to Altrincham depot, they have extended the route which will now go to Wythenshawe Hospital but I have been told it will not be able to carry wheelchairs, Arriva will carry wheelchairs in the evenings - what use is that to people who need the service in the daytime.

Why take over a service which has been running usefully to all passengers and then make it worse - a step backwards?   Most definitely

I've been informed today by three people that over fifty complaints have been received regarding the replacement bus service - i.e. the bus is too small, old people can't get their shopping trolleys on, young people havn't room for their pushchairs, and no access for wheelchairs.

Oh dear, have heard even the bus drivers tried to talk GMPTE out of using this 'Mickey Mouse' bus, and they are going to put two small buses on for the schoolchildren next week - instead of the one larger Arriva bus which sufficed ::)

Our disabled sit at home all the time... you could rarely see one in the street - there's not any services for them at all, they can't use the majority of public places on there own - there's not special lines to use with a wheelchair, there's not any way they could get on a bus or a tram.
Not long ago, I remember, the luckiest of them would get support in the form of this (with all the gears on the steering   wheel):

I would write to the newspapers, I really think that a lot of people just sit back instead of making moves to change things I have emailed my local councillor who is awaiting a reply from GMPTE and the MP for Altrincham and Sale has been notified.

Most disabled people use electric wheelchairs (hard to get on buses) or electric scooters (even harder)

An electric scooter has to be ridden on the roads, an electric wheelchair can be ridden on the footpaths

this wouldn't work here, as long as you get a relative or a friend in the local council otherwise you'll waste time.

They do. Not directly these days. Even directly by phone if needed. At least many  newspapers are too weak to go against the councils.
Even if it works, I mean people would go to newspapers, newspapers would make a fuss about the problem, nothing would make changes anyway. They can't provide all the disabled with everything they need, and even if they could, they can't change this in one day, can they?

Imagine someone in a wheelchair getting on this tram?

The tram looks like the entrance is low-level.

Dou you think Russia would ever join the European Union, is there ever any discussion about it in the papers?

Low-level?? I've always appreciated your sense of humor. There are two or three steps up behind this tram's doors. The distance from the ground to the first step is, on some stops, quite enough to beat a word high-jump record. I can't imagine even a healthy man sitting in a wheelchair with an assistance would ever manage to climb over those steps to get there.

This should be moved to the joke section cause I can't laugh here.

I'll laugh for you then :2funny:

The tram looks very similar to ones which run from Altrincham into Manchester - google Manchester Metro Tram

I was thinking that if Russia did join there may be some benefits in the area of help for the disabled, but I cannot honestly say that the EU has turned out to be an advantage to the UK - I thought it was all about trade, I didn't know there would be so many regulations and that we would be virtually 'ruled' by two 'Governments' (that includes our own of course)

This doesn't look similar for me. There's a world of difference.

I didn't ask you anything, did I? ) I've been always wondering what "bias" means... what? if you could explain with other words?
