Euro Qualifiers - England 4 Bulgaria 0
« on: 07:36:16, 04/09/10 »
3 September 2010, 22:43Defoe delighted with partnership Hat-trick hero Jermain Defoe hailed his partnership with Wayne Rooney after the pair teamed up profitably in Friday night's 4-0 win over Bulgaria in the opening Euro 2012 qualifier at Wembley.
The Tottenham striker lifted the 73,000 crowd by netting after only three minutes and added a second just after the hour mark.
Substitute Adam Johnson made sure of the points in the 83rd minute before Defoe completed his treble four minutes from time. Wayne Rooney helped to set up all four goals.
And Defoe said: "I'm delighted with the performance, not just the goals but the way we played and pressed in the first half."
The striker said of his partnership with Rooney: "Obviously when you play with a partner it takes a bit of time to gel but Wazza (Rooney) is a great player and technically gifted. Like I've said before, if I make the runs he'll find me and he did tonight.
"When I got the second he said 'keep going and you'll get the third' and it's always nice when you play with a partner and he wants you to get the hat-trick. It's good."
Despite the one-sided victory, Defoe, who expects to be fit for Tuesday's clash with Switzerland, had a word of praise for rookie goalkeeper Joe Hart.
"Especially in the second half (he played well), there was a one-on-one and he made a great save. He's been like that all season for his club," the striker told ITV1. "What a prospect he is."
England boss Fabio Capello added on ITV: "We were really focused on the game, I'm really happy.
"Rooney and Defoe are fantastic players, four assists from Rooney and three goals from Defoe. They were really good in every moment during the game.
"I'm really happy with the performance of the two forwards - but also the other players."
Defoe told BBC Radio Five Live: "It's difficult to find the words to describe the feeling you get when you score a hat-trick for your country - it's the best feeling in the world.
"To score one goal is fantastic, so to get a hat-trick in front of all the fans and my family... it's a special night."
The Tottenham striker had positive news about the injury he sustained as he completed his hat-trick, which resulted in him being immediately substituted.
He revealed: "I was just caught on my ankle. I didn't want to risk it because we've got another game next week - but I'm fine."
Defoe's club announced last month the player would undergo groin surgery which would rule him out for up to a month.
However, he said tonight: "I've put it on hold and might not have to have it.
"The last few months of last season my groin was a bit sore. I thought it was just fatigue but I felt it in the World Cup and a bit pre-season.
"You start to worry and I spoke to the physio at the club and he said maybe you'll need an operation. I think Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard may have had the same thing."
Hart, describing his save from Petrov, said: "I try to stand big. I've stolen it (the technique) from Kasper Schmeichel, who I worked with for a bit - and it's working for now. Luckily it (the ball) hit me.
"I'm feeling good at the moment, trying to keep the momentum rolling but there's so much I've got to improve on.
"It's nice to get the victory but it's gone now. We've brushed it aside and will start again on Tuesday against Switzerland."

Accrinton Stanley could beat Bulgaria. ENGLAND are [censored]. We have to have all weekend football cancelled just so England can play some fourth rate team.

Football’s wheel of fortune spins quickly. Wayne Rooney still has serious domestic issues to address but at least he returns home with the admiration of England’s players and supporters for a pedigree display of discipline and dynamism capped by a hugely significant goal. For Rooney, today’s newspapers will be worth reading leisurely rather than shredding instantly. Coming after only 10 minutes, his close-range strike immediately settled England, allowing them to conjure up what Fabio Capello described as the ''best first-half performance under my management’’. With Rooney dropping off to bolster midfield, preventing them being over-run as at the World Cup, and Steven Gerrard at his quarterbacking best in the centre, England brimmed with balance and counter-attacking potency. A brief second-half wobble confirmed that England remain a work in progress but this was a hugely encouraging evening for Capello, Gerrard and particularly Rooney.  Related ArticlesNobody should portray this as a case of Rooney answering his critics. He has only one person to answer to - her indoors. This was simply a case of Rooney going back to what he does best, focusing on finding a fraction of space and beating a keeper. Rarely can a goal have brought a scorer such pleasure. Rarely can a scorer have celebrated so little. Rooney knew that the cameras were on him, that this was no time to wallow in self-glory. Sensible.
Whatever his immaturity as a man, here was thrilling proof of Rooney’s ability to compete with commendable maturity. He was measured in the challenge, accurate in his passing and shrewd in his movement, shuttling between the hole and attack. Aware that one slip would launch a thousand negative headlines, Rooney was a model professional against the Swiss. The former Evertonian will need more of such restraint on Saturday when stepping out in front of the caustic choirs of Gwladys Street.
Here was a night of respite for Rooney and delight for England. Two wins do not make a qualifying campaign but England have set out brightly on the road to Euro 2012 and now sit atop of Group G ahead of Montenegro on goal difference. Montenegro visit Wembley on Oct 12 and it will be interesting to see whether Capello restores Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Frank Lampard.
As well as Joleon Lescott and particularly Phil Jagielka performed by the Rhine, the Ferdinand-Terry central-defensive axis remains England’s strongest. Lampard could have to wait as Gerrard again dominated in his best position.
Gerrard in the middle? How long has it taken to get there? To think people dared considered him best on the left. What a waste.
As with Gerrard in the centre, here was also another advertisement for the gifts of Adam Johnson, frustratingly overlooked for South Africa but a real tormentor of Switzerland’s left flank when replacing poor Theo Walcott. The Arsenal flier took a knock on the ankle during the build-up to Rooney’s goal and will be out for a fortnight.
It was good to see Capello finally trusting in Johnson, who has been outstanding since joining Manchester City last January. Eastlands should also take great pride from the sight of England finishing the match with six City players. A Blue Moon lit the sky over the elegant border town of Basel.
It had been the sort of rainy, potentially tricky night when sliding tacklers could have started in Switzerland and ended in France. It had been an occasion when all eyes and cameras were inevitably trained on Rooney, who began tucked in behind Jermain Defoe, seemingly circumspect in the challenge as if wanting to stay low profile. Not for long.
Walcott began the move for Rooney’s goal, sending the overlapping Glen Johnson tearing down the right. Walcott darted into the box, heading for the near-post. Johnson’s cut-back was hard and fast, driven low into the box, missing out Walcott, who unfortunately was caught by his Swiss marker. As Walcott slumped to the soaked turf, the ball sped on to Rooney, who swept England ahead.
Adam Johnson ran on to replace Walcott, marking his arrival with a wonderful turn to deceive Reto Ziegler. Hitherto vaunted, Switzerland’s defence was a mess. Defoe narrowly failed to turn in a James Milner cross. Adam Johnson tried his luck from 35 yards out but his shot skimmed over.
Rooney then paraded his creative powers, clipping in a magnificent ball to Defoe, who spun away from two defenders and brought an exceptional save from Diego Benaglio. Rooney resembled a golfer going through his clubs, soon chipping a wonderful ball to the far-post where only Stephane Grichting’s alertness denied Defoe.
England showed some frailty after the break, Joe Hart suffering a brief bout of the wobbles, dropping a free-kick and a couple of crosses. England still threatened, Glen Johnson forcing a fine save from Benaglio. They were particularly helped when Stephan Lichtsteiner was dismissed for two bookable offences, first for dissent and then a foul on Milner.
Even Switzerland’s famed neutrality had limits and the fans barracked Capello’s compatriot, Nicola Rizzoli, particularly when the Italian referee failed to censure Gerrard for a late tackle. The hosts’ anger intensified when England’s captain, ignoring the stricken Defoe lying prostrate on the floor, released Adam Johnson, who rounded Benaglio and angled a shot into the net.
Switzerland, depleted in numbers but not spirit, responded. Xherdan Shaqiri escaped Ashley Cole and let fly left-footed from 25 yards, the ball arrowing past Hart. Capello then re-jigged England in 4-2-3-1 formation with Darren Bent the spearhead and the Sunderland attacker swiftly struck, confidently putting away a good pass from Milner on a very good night for England.

England v Montenegro full time report(0)(0)

England 0 Montenegro 0
A disappointing England were booed off after they couldn’t break down Montenegro at Wembley, as the visitors stayed top of Euro 2012 qualifying Group G.
The hosts were lacklustre in the first half, although Peter Crouch did come close to getting on the end of Steven Gerrard’s early pass, before the forward headed Glen Johnson’s cross over the bar.
Adam Johnson’s free kick went wide, while the disappointing Wayne Rooney saw a shot saved, as did Gareth Barry.
Montenegrin defender Milan Jovanović was lucky to escape a handball appeal in the penalty area, before his dipping effort smashed against the England crossbar late on.
This result will be a disappointment to Fabio Capello, but means that Montenegro top the group with 10 points for four games, and they have yet to concede a goal.
England were taking on the only team above them in the group, and knew that a good result would put them top heading into Euro 2012’s “winter break.” The Montenegrins, missing star forward Mirko Vucinic of Roma, were considered to be there for the taking, but England found them hard to break down.
Ashley Young impressed for the hosts in the opening stages, but the hosts struggled to create chances, although Crouch was close to connecting with a clever Gerrard pass early on, before Crouch headed over from Glen Johnson’s cross, and Adam Johnson curled a free kick narrowly wide.
Gerrard apart, England’s midfield were struggling to create anything – with Gareth Barry particularly wasteful – and while the visitors didn’t look too threatening, the Wembley crowd grew frustrated by the lack of the home side’s progress, with pockets of the crowd booing them off at half time.
With Rooney looking a shadow of his former self, England’s invention was only really coming from Gerrard at the start of the second period, and the former skipper’s ball soon found Rooney, who drew a good save from goalkeeper Mladen Bozovic, who then gobbled up Crouch’s rebound.
England were playing poorly, but they were almost indebted to defender Jovanović – a different player to his namesake who plays for Liverpool – who clearly handled an Ashley Cole cross in the penalty area with around a quarter of an hour remaining.
The defender was almost to have an even greater impact on the game though, as his superb dipping volley smashed back off Joe Hart’s crossbar with the England ‘keeper well beaten.
Capello had already turned to Bolton forward Kevin Davies by this period, making him
England’s oldest debutant since 1950, but despite the 33-year-old winning several headers in an attempt to link up with the disappointing Rooney, he was soon to have an even more predictable impact, and picked up a booking for backing into Miodrag Dzudovic.
In the closing stages, Davies knocked down for Gareth Barry to shoot at Bozovic, but England were severely lacking in any real quality, and the match petered out into a goalless draw.
Not a catastrophic result for the Three Lions by any means, but hardly the ideal way to finish a disappointing year.
