Colin Montgomerie delighted at Europe Ryder Cup win after two years of 'hell'
By James Nursey 5/10/2010
RYDER CUP 2010: EUROPE 14½ USA 13½Colin Montgomerie last night toasted Europe's amazing Ryder Cup win - then revealed it had ended "two years of hell".
Graeme McDowell won the last of 12 singles matches at Celtic Manor to clinch a dramatic victory by 14½ points to 13½. It was the first contest since Kiawah Island in 1991, which Europe lost, to go to the final game.
And Montgomerie immediately ruled out ever captaining Europe again after a tensionfilled afternoon in Wales. "It's been two years of hell - I don't plan to do it again," said the relieved Scot. "But to captain this winning team was the proudest moment of my golfing career.
"Each player delivered at least half a point out there to get to the famous 14½ that I've been dreaming of for nearly two years now.
"I must congratulate all 12 players who have done a magnificent job in regaining this Ryder Cup. It's very difficult to regain. These matches are so close now, so close."
Trailing 9½ to 6½ going into the final day after a disastrous third session, USA rallied to win the singles 7-5. But McDowell's victory over Hunter Mahan, who crumbled at the 17th, sparked joyous scenes among Europe's players and fans.Advertisement - article continues below » Montgomerie said: "Graeme was put there for a very good reason. He won the US Open, was full of confidence and it showed. His birdie on the 16th was unbelievable.
"We got off to a flyer, were up in eight and it was over, but they came back extremely well and all credit to them."
McDowell was as ecstatic as captain Monty. He said: "I didn't want it to come down to me, that's for sure.
"The US Open felt like a back nine with my dad at Royal Portrush compared to this. I've never felt as nervous in my life.
"I was doing it for my teammates, all these people, Europe and Monty. It was a lot of pressure. It feels amazing."
Ian Poulter won his singles to end as Europe's joint top scorer with Luke Donald on three points.
