Lawson's Mill, Jersey Street, New Cross
« on: 17:13:20, 13/11/10 »
Hello,
I'm just wondering IF anyone can remember a Mill on Jersey Street called Lawson's? It would have been in operation in 1939? Wether it was called Lawson's Mill or if that was a name given to it (locally) i don't know? Any information will be gratefully received.
Thanks
Stesal

Remember my family speaking about Lawson's mill when I was young....they lived in Jersey street & lots of family, friends & neighbours worked there.

Hi Shelly,
Do you know if the mill was just called Lawson's, or, was there another name for it? Thanks

Hi

I'm sorry but it was always referred to as Lawson's mill. I'm afraid I don't know any more. I will ask around the family though & let you know if I find anything more.

Hi Shelly
Thanks for the reply. I was told that it pertained to the Royal Mill? but, that could have just been a guess? I would really appreciate it if you could ask around, as, it relates to an important piece of information that I need for our Family Tree.
Again, Thanks

There used to be a mill right opposite the Royal Mill on Henry Street during the 1800's, but I'm sure this was called Long Mill.  The two buildings were connected by a walkway which can still be seen right above the top floor of Royal Mill (now bricked up of course).

Thanks for that Carl,
do you know if the Royal was also called Lawson's? I am of the opinion that Lawson's was a name given by people who worked there rather than it actually being called Lawson's as there are no references to a Lawson's Mill anywhere? I've scoured the books in Central Library, Wikipedia etc! and Nothing?
Any info would be welcomed.
Cheers

I have to be honest with you Stesal, I've not heard of that name and can't find any mention of it in books that I have on mills in Manchester.  However, I did a bit of googling and Lawson's is mentioned on a webpage of the Greater Manchester County Record Office, but unfortunately there's no information about the mill itself, only a reference number to a photograph they have in their collection.  It's definitely worth getting in touch with them to see if they can help you:

Below, is the page where it's mentioned - you'll have to scroll down to the bottom:

Carl Thanks you so much for that! It's exactly the kind of information that I wanted? My wife's late maternal G/Mother worked there & tragically died young whilst employed by them. I have searched in the past (in vain) for any photo's & always wondered IF there might be some of Works Outings which she could have been on? IF it turns out she IS on this, it will be the Only photo of her in existence?
Again, Many Thanks

There was a mill that looked like a factory, it was on Rodney Street which does join at the end with Jersey Street. Lawson & Sons were yarn dyers.

In 1957 the company was acquired by the Lancashire Cotton Company.
