Talking about buildings, Manchester Central Library takes some beating - my favourite ;)

There is also a glass-roofed building, I think it's near Cross Street, had been told it was the old Manchester Stock Exchange building, could be empty now - anyone know anything about it please post

I remember the old Royal Exchange building.  I worked in there briefly in the early 70s as a temp for an insurance company (dead boring!).  They'd put a wonderful modern glass roof on the building and installed a theatre in the large central area where goods used to be sold and exchanged in those days of Manchester's financial glory. I think it was called the Royal Exchange Theatre Company.  There were shops along the outside, including the Danish Food Centre.  I used to eat in there sometimes - open sandwiches with that orange flavoured cheese coated in sliced hazlenuts. Happy days, despite the boring job. ::)

I worked for a short time in an airline office in the Royal Exchange Arcade, there aren't any airline offices there any more - I have an inkling that the building I mean is on the other side of the road tucked away in a narrow street, actually I didn't know Manchester had a stock exchange, maybe Tony could find a photo :-\

:) I started my first job at Boots in The Royal Exchange in 1959.
I worked there for about 6 months then went to work for the GPO
as a telephonist at Telephone House on Chapel Street. They were
both very good firms to work for.xxx

The building that you refer to is called The Royal Exchange building, it dominates Cross St. Inside is the world famous Royal Exchange Theatre in the round, which looks more like a space module than a theatre. Apart from a couple of nice places to eat inside the exchange, if you walk around to the back of the trading floor, behind the theatre, you can still see the last days trading prices high up on the wall from when it ceased trading in I believe the mid 60s. There used to be a smaller Stock exchange after that in Norfolk St. Which is housed in the Stock Exchange building, and is now a restaurant

Another must see building is Chethams library on Long Millgate. The building dates from 1422 and became a library in 1655 after Humphry Chetham left a bequest for a library, hospital and school to be built. It is a public library, (Almost certainly the oldest public library in the country, if not the world). stepping inside you are transported back in time, most of the furniture in the reading room is the same furniture that was in there on the opening day in 1653. You can even sit at the same desk where Marx and Engels used to sit and write.

Great information there, thanks so much, it's surprising what is on the doorstep as I didn't know about Chetham's library (knew of the music school of course)

Must go and find the restaurant in the Royal Exchange Building now  O0 ;)
