Manchester TV
« on: 08:34:43, 26/08/11 »
OK  a ton of  TV is made in Manchester... ie  Corrie... but
99% is made in studio... in  sets,   you very rarely get a glimpse
of the city of Manchester.

In  Cutting  It   with Amanda  Holden ... a few years back,  you got
a bit more of a view of the Streets of  Manchester.
There must have been some more TV  over the years.

Is nt it about time we got Deidre and the girls out on a shopping spree
in Piccadilly  and  saw a few scenes of Manchester on TV  ?
we see zilch so far.

EE  suffer from the same disease,  they film in London , yet we never see a glimpse
of the city,  its all shot  in studio sets.
They just dont seem to want to go to the effort of outside location filming

Found this, quote:

Many of the most popular television programmes ever to have been appeared on British television have been made on location in Manchester. From the longest running and still the most popular soap opera of the lot in Coronation Street, to the biggest comedy drama ever in Cold Feet; from the popular Queer As Folk, Clocking Off and Cutting It series to the almost national events that became of each episode of Cracker and Prime Suspect - they were all filmed here. Comedies such as Phoenix Nights, The Royle Family and Early Doors couldn't have possibly been located anywhere other than Manchester. The amazing landscape and architecture, coupled with the warm Mancunian sense of humour makes TV programmes filmed in Manchester that little bit more special.

Don't forget Frost out there in Denton.....

Outside filming is difficult and expensive though.  All lighting and background noise can be controlled in a studio.  If you ship the entire cast and crew out to a location and there's a storm, you've wasted a whole day and all the salaries.  With a schedule like a soap, you'd never catch up.
It's nice to be important, but it's also important to be nice.

Yes and no.  Truthfully, there has never been a soap for which I would stop and sit down to watch every episode.  My Mum is bats about Corrie, and also watched Emmerdale when it was a Farm, so I'm not snooty about soaps and will watch a storyline now and then if it looks interesting in the trailers.  Think the last time I tuned in was the tram crash.  I gave the East End swapped babies and Yorkshire assisted suicide/murder trial a miss - not fun.

That was a fictional Denton, not the one in Manchester. I think the outdoor scenes in Frost were around West Yorkshire towns.

Mancunian films were based in an old church in Rusholme. Frank Randal made a number of films there. It was also the home of Top Of The Pops for a few years.

There was a one off special filmed for TV at Christmas starring comedian, Eddie Izzard and was filmed entirely in Manchester, a lot in Salford and various other areas, was a very good mini film.
