People of Manchester - the world needs you NOW
« on: 15:58:01, 19/10/11 »
There are protestors in the peace gardens right now that need you. They have been there 24/7 since 09/10. They are currently undermanned, and have problems with security on the camp. They are also being harassed by drunks/druggies.

They are part of the current occupy movement that started on Wall Street (actually started in Egypt but for arguments sake) The basis of which is that we the 99% of the world population can no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1% that own about 60% of the wealth in this country.

You cannot fail to have noticed the financial crisis we are in, do you really think your actions have caused this? What does financial crisis mean? All it means is that your money is going to make a rich person even richer. There is no crisis, just global fraud.

Please go down to the gardens and support your fellow 99% and sign up here http://www.occupybritain.co.uk to find out more  O0 :smitten:

Just as a matter of interest, and without wishing to demean what the protesters occupying the peace garden are trying to do. How many of them are gainfully employed?

@ Adsum

I dont know how many of the occupiers are unemployed, and as i dont live in Manchester, its a bit difficult for me to find out. I'm sure if you popped down there to show some support, you could probably ask them :)

From todays Manchester Evening News.

Anti-government protesters have abandoned their camp in Manchester – leaving tents and rubbish strewn in their wake.
The 30-strong group – who first ‘occupied’ the city centre during the Conservative Party conference earlier this month – have been camping in the Peace Gardens in St Peter’s Square for just over a fortnight.
They described themselves as ‘hippies, activists and anarchists’ who wanted a fair deal for the poor. The group said they were planning to stay in the gardens ‘for the long haul’ – but disappeared after being served with a notice to leave by the council.
The cash-strapped town hall now faces a four-figure bill to clean up and remove the tents, bedding, uneaten food and furniture and even syringes they left behind. Nigel Murphy, the council's executive member for the environment, said the site would be cordoned off so council staff could begin the clean up.

The tents will be put into storage in case protesters want to reclaim them, he said. Coun Murphy added: “It’s a real mess with all the rubbish needing to be cleared up. It’s a shame, because while we’ve been largely supportive of the campaign, we’ve now got to clean this up which I think will cost thousands of pounds and a lot of man-hours.” The protesters were originally camped in Albert Square but moved to the Peace Gardens after being threatened with forceable eviction by police.
Passers-by were less than impressed with the rubbish left behind.
Beryl Torrington, 55, an office worker from Leigh, said: “ One of their signs says something about ‘free land’ but if that’s the case, they should take their rubbish with them.”
Kanan Bowman, an 18-year-old student from Prestwich, said: “This isn't making a stand - it's just making a mess. They say they care about Manchester – but this isn’t what people want.”
We are all lying in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.

It seems they don't really care about winning support from the public, because that's who will end up footing the cost. ::)

The whole financial mess was kicked off by a group of "poor people" who conned bankers into giving them mortgage loans on properties nobody else wanted.  By the time the bankers realised it was a deliberate fraud, they had a whole community with loans they had never intended to repay.

Due to the way banks underwrite risk for one another to limit damage, the effect of these toxic loans went all round the world.  Banks then clamped down on lending to anyone, for fear of getting caught again - the Credit Crunch.  The Crunch limited spending for some and terrifed a lot more, so people stopped spending money.  Shops went bust, manufacturers and suppliers shed jobs, and we entered a recession.  All driven by the very same "poor people" these protestors want to call victims.  Pardon me for not thinking much of that!

I am working the extra hours it takes to make up for the cut in what clients can afford to pay me and the increasing shop prices.  My income isn't index-linked with automatic cost-of-living increases.  So speaking personally, I am too busy to indulge in a fortnight's camping holiday.  And I'm still not earning enough to fund a drug habit!  >:(

some people conned a banker that's a contradiction in terms isn't it? How'd thy do that then? sounds like something out of the Great Gatsby or an urban myth you cannot con a banker so easily and if you can then the said banker should have his head cut off. :-\

They applied for mortgages on houses in a particular US town/area where houses were hard to shift.  Lied about their ability to repay the loans.  Spread the word amongst their friends.  Whole big community of people owing millions upon millions of dollars they never intended to repay......all secured on houses unwanted by anyone else and therefore worthless even if repossessed.  It's not an urban myth - it's common knowledge to anyone who can read a newspaper or watch the telly or listen to the radio.

The bankers concerned were heavily criticised for failing to spot the fibs.  They were indeed stupid and far too interested in the interest rates rather than their responsibilities towards borrowers.  Hence the sudden clampdown on lending people what they can't actually afford to repay.  Bankers all around the world trusted the US banks and bought into the toxic debts as part of the investment packages in one another.

I am not suggesting the bankers are completely innocent victims - but the whole financial mess we saw snowballed out of the deliberately fraudulent antics of a bunch of poor people.  It's a bit much to blame Cliff Richard, Sir Paul McCartney and Alan Sugar for it, as these protestors are.
It's nice to be important, but it's also important to be nice.

They are amongst the 1% of the world's richest people targeted by these protesters as disgusting for possessing 99% of the World's wealth.  Of course, if you take them literally and think that the wealthiest 1% of six billion+ is actually sixty-odd million people globally, then there are probably one or two actually protesting about themselves....  ;)

That's not part of the protest.  It's "Down with the rich", not "Down with the idle rich"  ;)
