Hi chad, I used to visit the record stalls on Shudehill every Thursday ( pay day ) during my lunch break.

I worked just round the corner for the CWS on Balloon Street ( 1960 - 65 ) and got a lot of my early stuff from there at bargain prices.

Here's a reminder :

Also got a lot of stuff from Rare Records and Ralphs Records which was next to the Expresso Bongo near Victoria station.

I remember Pip's and Jilly's in the 1970's I was only 16 and had to be in by midnigth, so had to leaver as the clubs were warming up, but being more interested in football anyway..I wasn't bothered, but the fashion then certainly left alot to be desired...lol ;D
Flawed but sensitive.. I continue my trek against life's petty injustices

I was wondering if anyone went to Rafters/Jillys in the 70's/early 80's? I am researching the change in clubs and gig venues and want to know what the club was like then and what the attraction to unsigned/live bands were? Did anyone go to the club to see Joy Division or Depeche mode around that time too?

There's more memories in this thread than I can cope with - but only one mention so far of Time and Place near Victoria which was such a great club, especially when Tony Johnson (TJ the DJ) was spinning. Does anyone remember Jackie's Explosion, somewhere up the top end of Market Street. When you weren't dancing you could lie around on beds - so decadent!

Who are you then Roadgiant? the DJs in Jillys when it was on Gore street were Charlie and Paul and then another Paul for a short time who lived Stockport way near Strawberry Gardens pub. Then it was Ian and Robbie at Jillys Rockworld and Dave Morissey but he was much later on. How do I know? because I was there!!!!!!

me and my mate, Hess, start at Belle Vue wrestling 50p. Bus to town 10p, past the stoneground (golden earing, budgie, leo sayer in clown suit) the pub is called the Crown, crap ale at 20p a pint brilliant stoney express mural and the coolest juke box, everything looked and sounded better after a talk with stuart 50p a dot, walk up to dantzic place to the club which is called Waves 50p in Newcy brown 30p do not try the food this place makes Jillys MK1 look posh, and all the better for it! keep at it till 2 or your stomach rejects you, then try to get home. all done for £5 and you try to tell the kids and they won't beleive you. Hey ash, The Crown had the best jukebox in town, beware the bikers riding to the bar on their choppers, as for waves  :o burger & 5 chips on a paper plate, this was served free, to get round the licencing laws at the time, the 50p dot sounds about right too, add all that with the Newky brown and Dante's Inferno looked tame.....happy daze eh O0

Ah the Crown that was where my then boyfriend now husband used to wait for me to get of the 163 bus from there we would go to waves..... My mate used to cook those chips I'll have you know. I used to laugh all night long at some of the people who frequwnted waves, myoh lordy you needed a sense of humour to go to that place. Laughter I always find is so much better than moaning and aren't places like waves something you look back on and think 'what the [censored]*" part of lifes rich tapestry

I used to frequent Waves most weeks, one week a friend of a friend tagged along, he was a prospective candidate for the Tory party in Stretford  :-[ , we didn't get through the door before he was knocked out cold by a biker, reason being ? "He looked too straight" needless to say, he never returned.
