It's no deterrent to people like Dale Cregan.  If he knew he'd hang for doing it, he'd be even more inclined to shoot to kill and make damn sure he killed all the witnesses too.   It takes a special kind of vermin to buy and throw grenades.

Bizarre thing to do though, stay in hiding, then deliberately lure the police, shoot and chuck a hand grenade at two officers - and then hand yourself in at the station afterwards.  I wonder who actually made the call sending them to that address?  There's no excusing anything he's done, and he should go to prison for ever, BUT if someone sent the Police there knowing Cregan was armed, then he or she should also be held accountable.

It's nice to be important, but it's also important to be nice.

The police believe there was a conspiracy to hide him and they are the ones they will be looking for now

The first grenade attack was something to do with shootings in a pub - all part of some sort of feud.  They'll know exactly who's on his side.  Proving it will be another matter, I suppose.

More I think about it though, the less I believe that he'd lure a couple of officers there to kill them but not try to get away afterwards. It just makes no sense when he's been hiding for weeks and they had no idea where.  Maybe someone without the courage to inform thought that was a way to get him caught.  Maybe some evil soul thought that it was worth a couple of bobbies to really land Cregan in the muck?   It's all peculiar.

Maybe his 'buddies' were going to turn him in and then claim the £50,000 reward

My personal feeling, is that these two women were let down, i think the police were already looking for cregan in the area, the helicopter has been over before this happened. Not to mention they are dealing with elements with no respect or fear of anyone, who rule their territory  by terror and intimidation.   One of the women came from  the village of Diggle i cant imagine a bigger culture diference.

Osman warning, letter or noticeThese are warnings of death threat or high risk of murder that are issued by British police or legal authorities to the expected victim.[3] They are used when there is intelligence of the threat, but there is not enough evidence to justify the police arresting the expected murderer.[4]
The warnings are named after a high-profile case, Osman v United Kingdom

Is Lozflan suggesting the Police Officers should have had Osman warnings?  They are for specific threat against a specific person. I would imagine a fair few members of the feuding families have them now....

I have to say, I don't see how the Police let down their Officers.  Dale Cregan had killed (and tried to kill) members of the opposing faction in a known and ongoing feud.  That's no basis for thinking he'd murder two bobbies at random.  It was a routine call reporting a possible minor burglary.  Hindsight is always 20/20 vision, but I really don't see how anyone could possibly have seen this at the time.

Just heard on the news that he's been charged with four murders and another four attempted ones.  I wonder how he feels about the rest of his life in prison?  I think I'd prefer the death penalty to that.....

I could see the police barrier from my door, ive been prevented from returning home by the area lock down  i have seen the street arrests this week before this, but didnt connect. it was knownthat the escape car was found here [ from his last murders] cregan is a known gunman, and has friends here.
