A Mr Osman was shot dead and his son wounded by a man they knew, for no good reason.  The family went to court because they said the Police had sufficient information to know there was a serious threat to Mr Osman's life, but they had said nothing.    As a result, there is now a requirement to notify anyone (including criminals) when the Police have reason to believe their life is threatened, and the letters are called Osman warnings.  In this case, I suppose it's about reprisals within the existing feud.

I'm not sure birching works on people who've grown up around violence.  I think it just serves to reinforce what they've learned.   I am in favour of productive punishment - make them do something useful and/or show them the consequences of their actions for other people.  Show them there's an alternative to their way of thinking.  And then when it becomes clear which of them are beyond saving, lock them up for life so they can't hurt anyone else.
It's nice to be important, but it's also important to be nice.

First degree murder - life should mean life

if considered a danger to the public then they must be in prison until properly judged otherwise

Family feud.  They start young...... The armed escort is to make sure Cregan survives to get to prison.  Don't give much for his chances after that.

I doubt the EDL had anything to do with it though.  They tend to be specifically focused on immigrants and their descendants.

I was being polite.  The EDL specifically opposes the spread of all things Islam.  Veils, mosques, Sharia law - they believe (as did the Norwegian gunman) that permitting Muslims to go about their daily lives in peace somehow undermines our own national identity.   Mostly, they just turn up and shout stuff and scuffle in the street.  They'd certainly not look to kill two white police officers.

Yes, the BNP used to be Fascist white supremacist skinheads wanting to deport anyone who wasn't white.  Their leader had an epiphany though and now they wear suits to cover their HH tattoos, stand for elections and just want to ensure the happiness of all their brethren of colour by returning them to the land of their origins.   ::)

I thought I must mention this:

3 March 2013 Last updated at 11:10     Charity walk raises £2,000  PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes were killed on 18 September
  • Police charity walk for killed PCs
  • Garden unveiled for killed PCs
  • Police bike ride honours shot PCs

  • A charity walk around Greater Manchester in memory of two police officers killed on duty has raised £2,000.

PCs Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, were shot in Hattersley on 18 September at a suspected burglary.

Ten officers, from Tameside and Oldham Division, began the 110 mile (177km) on Friday and ended earlier.

Walk spokesman Chris Hayden said it had raised £2,000 but there were still more donations to come.

The walk started at the Civic Hall at Uppermill, passing through Stockport, Altrincham, Hale and Culcheth.

The officers arrived in Wigan town centre on Saturday morning, before walking to Horwich and Ramsbottom.

During the evening and overnight they travelled through Denshaw before returning to Uppermill.

Money raised will go to the Care of Police Survivors charity.

Dale Cregan, 29, has admitted the officers' murders and is currently on trial at Preston Crown Court.

'I'll be waiting': Dale Cregan called police to a house in Mottram, then shot them
       Dale Cregan trial
Dale Cregan will spend the rest of his life in jail for four murders, including those of two police officers in Greater Manchester.

Cregan had admitted killing PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes, and father and son David and Mark Short.

He also admitted the attempted murders of John Collins, Michael Belcher and Ryan Pridding during the attack on Mark Short at a Droylsden pub in May 2012.

He was cleared of a charge of attempted murder of Sharon Hark.

Passing a whole-life sentence at Preston Crown Court, Mr Justice Holroyde QC said Cregan had had "a cold-blooded and ruthless determination to end the lives of PCs Bone and Hughes".

"You acted with premeditated savagery [and] drew those two officers into a calculated trap to kill them," he said.
    Family feud
Four other men were jailed for their parts in the killings of David and Mark Short and one further man was jailed for assisting an offender.

The murder of Mark Short at the Cotton Tree Inn by Cregan, Luke Livesey and Damian Gorman came after a decade-long feud between families.

Following the death Cregan, Anthony Wilkinson and Jermaine Ward killed Mark Short's father David in a gun and grenade attack.

With the help of Mohammed Imran Ali, the three then went on the run.

Cregan later lured PCs Hughes and Bone to their deaths before handing himself into police.

Livesey, 28, and Gorman, 38, were each jailed for 33 years for the murder of Mark Short and the three attempted murders at the Cotton Tree Inn in Droylsden.

Wilkinson, 34, and Ward, 24, were jailed for 35 years and 33 years respectively for killing David Short at his Clayton home in August.

Ali, 32, was jailed for seven years for assisting an offender.

I knew the Shorts and Wilkinson by sight. I passed Dave Shorts house minutes after he was killed, just as the police came screaming up the street. I had no idea until a few minutes later what had transpired. As terrible as the Shorts killings were, I doubt there will be many law abiding people in the area who will mourn their passing. With regard to Cregan. I believe he should hang for the senseless and barbaric murder of those two policewomen. May they rest in peace.

I agree.  At 29, given the sort of average lifespan for his generation, he will spend 50 years in prison.  Knowing he will never get out.   I am sure he would rather hang.

I still can't believe anyone would use hand grenades as he did.  Some people really are beyond fixing, aren't they?
