It was never going to be a massive event, was it?  Given that a third or so of the voting public couldn't even be bothered to turn out for the 2010 General Election.

I can't see that the actual elections themselves would cost any more than the standard local elections for councillors and the like - same electorate, same polling cards, same facilities and staff.

Perhaps that figure also includes all the consulting costs, Police time in developing the job descriptions, cost of advertising the roles, processing applications, setting up websites for each post, telly ad campaign etc etc etc.  I am always suspicious of such nice round numbers though.....   ;)

Me too.  It has been said that accountants pick a number from 1 to 9 and then randomly choose the amount of zeros to add to the end of that number.

Police Commissar's....
Did anyone vote their new police politico commissar in? It makes me laugh.... the usual nose in the trough worn out MP's all went for it. I was so happy to see "Lord Prezza" (chav) get a kicking by a Tory in his own back yard.... the man of principle that wouldn't touch the house of Lords being a true socialist and all but relented because his wife wanted to be a Lady. (money had nothing to do with it) A Lady I ask? She looks like a cosmetic meccano kit but to give her her dues, she did stand by him over all his affairs with those beautiful women.... well compared to her anyway.... sorry for being snipey.... I just find it all funny.

The crux of the matter is that these new politico elites are in charge of the police budget and crime fighting in your area.... they are the go-between between you and the police to channel your concerns and ideas to. What concerns me is that MP's in general don't understand a budget, a spread sheet or even financial planning, they think in the way of "other peoples money" in abundant supply.... they don't think like you would have to in order to run a solvent business.... especially the career politician who has never had a real job in the real world.

They are now thrust into the real world of front line budget and resource management that is capped to a specific amount. You have to know your job well to work within a budget and even more so if its being reduced as cut backs always inevitably affect a service or company so its going to be funny watching this new top down "elected" and not time served management come to terms with something they have neither any training in or experience of at a front line level.

A good friend of mine who is a copper in Birkenhead tells me that on some nights they can only muster two squad cars to patrol at night and even they need a break at some time.

I would have gone for something a little more drastic.... I would have called for "elected Judges" not the police.... they do their job under very difficult circumstances, they apprehend the villain and pass the file on then the liberal/lefty Judges nearly always let the villain off with a soft sentence and they are back on the streets repeat offending again. Judges also take their own interpretation of the "human rights" charter to the extremes and make it do things it was never intended for.... yet they are untouchable and totally unaccountable to you and me.... does anyone think like me that its the Judges that need to answer to us and not their foot patrol, the police who do their job so well?
Being silly is a state of mind.... being foolish is a way of life.

Well I didn't vote, didn't get any information or anyone round at all to answer questions - as for Lord Prescott, why oh why does the wife end up being called 'Lady' when she hasn't done anything to deserve it

She married him.  Same way Kate got to be a Duchess and Diana got to be a Princess and Grace Kelly got to be a Queen.    Funny that when the lower classes do it for cash money, it's a lot less socially acceptable!  ;)

Diana and Grace could have been called 'Consort' which was good enough for Prince Albert - but if my husband (could hardly bear to type that word) got awarded a knighthood I would feel very embarrassed to have anyone call me 'Lady'

Albert had no choice - he couldn't be "King" because he would then outrank the Queen.  Much as Philip can't be King today.  The laws of Royal succession favour men above women.

Just googled this:
  • Queen consort, wife of a reigning king
  • Prince consort, husband of a reigning queen
  • King consort, rarely used alternative title for husband of a reigning queen
  • Princess consort, rarely used alternative title for wife of a reigning king
  • I'd best get back on topic now :-[
