Being in the US, when you say football, do you mean European football (soccer) or American football. Two of our (NFL) teams play a game each year in London. It is always a sellout.

We have both here. One hundred and fifty miles to the west is the Cincinnati Bengals NFL football team and one hundred miles to the north in the Columbus Crew professional soccer team.

We tend to refer to your game as "American Football".  Just "football" in the UK almost invariably means soccer.
It's nice to be important, but it's also important to be nice.

I can clarify this ,almost  none.
O0  But  having said that a lot of teenagers buy the caps with American football clubs emblazed upon them , they go well with there jeans hanging around there knees apparently .

On a serious note I have seen a few clubs on a Sunday at our local park but they don't seem to have a regular long period of sustainability .
The cost of helmets and equipment is prohibiting it here and the almost virtual no coverage of it.

I could be wrong, but I think Channel 4 were possibly the first channel to broadcast live American football matches in the late 1980's.  I do remember a lad I worked with at the time used to occasionally stay up until the early hours of the morning watching them and he'd turn up for work the next day still half asleep.  It's only Sky and ESPN now that seem to show these matches.

On the topic of football (soccer). They put the scores across the bottom of the TV screen. I see two Manchester teams. Which one is the most popular.

I seem to recall C4 promoting  American Football back then too,  might've been Sunday afternoons?  Never got into it myself, too many stoppages and not enough action.

It's possible they may have shown highlights in the afternoons, but I do recall him saying he stayed up until well past midnight to catch them live.  I don't remember what day of the week it was however, but definitely wouldn't have been on a Saturday as he generally turned up for work the next day looking like he hadn't been to bed.  He certainly loved the sport, but like yourself, I never really found it entertaining if I'm being honest.

I'm half-sure they were live matches on Sunday afternoons/ early evenings, maybe your mate stayed up to watch the entire thing which would've gone on for hours hence the bleary eyes. C4 was also big on promoting the Superbowl which would've gone well into the wee small hours.

Never really got into it either...ad breaks every 2 mins and all that. Boring!

You've got me thinking now - it could well have been this what he was watching.

Could well be matey.  O0  I also seem to recall back then in the hype to promote AF that AF league tables started appearing in a couple of newspapers.   ::)  Who gave a toss about that stuff? I sure didnt

Not sure how long Channel 4 had the rights to broadcast American football, but I can't imagine the viewing figures being particularly high quite frankly.  It's the same with Italian football - for a while Channel 4 used to show these too (can't remember if they were live or not), but this has now ended up on satellite as well.

Aye I recall C4 heavily promoting Italian football, presenter was that James wotsit with the baldy head. Matches were live but totally boring...all 1-0 garbage and Italian defensive play.......zzzzzzzzzzzzz.  Think that would be early 90s maybe.
