What's the significance of the rebuilt roman fort area? Is that where Adam Pickup was found? I remember driving round there in the middle of the night with my mates looking for somewhere quiet to stop and eat our takeaways like 10 years ago. It frightened us that much we drove straight out. You'd have to be very brave to wander round there under the arches at night alone. But then that goes the same for wandering along a canal. That's one of the things I don't get. I used to get totally wasted when I was younger and quite a few times end up on my own getting home, but it didn't make me fearless of any type of surroundings. I remember once leaving Sankeys alone and was pretty frightened just walking back to Piccadilly alone, the area around the clubs a desolate wasteland. Quite at odds with the way the media see these young men getting drunk, turning into zombies and helplessly falling into canals etc. Also interesting is the fact it took the police quite a while to find some of the missing. Surely the area around train stations and canals is quite high up there in terms of where to look. The Chris Brahney incident I found quite strange. My initial understanding was he'd wandered down the other side path to the riverside with the low wall and ledge. My own theory was he may have been peering/balancing on the wall having a cig and a car horn had sounded, engine starting, and spooked him and sent him over the ledge. There's a car park there. However I've recently realised its an apartments ledge a few strides along. I find it odd he walked across town with the Primark bag. There were reports he was in Wellies at the concert. Yet I don't think he walked across town in wellies, and if true why didn't he ditch them and the bag. In terms of drugs, a long walk across town could indicate he was high on e and it would probably bring the effects on, the effects can give a heightened adoration of nice views etc, and leave you unable to properly balance/lacking co-ordination on your feet but from what I gather that particular ledge has quite a high surround, which is the obvious baffling point. In terms of the others, the Michael David Plunkett report was very chilling. Young bloke in the fishing pond in Bramhall. Yesterday in the news two men were found dead in Gloucestershire - canal again.

Some good points Mike. Did a bit of research recently into the come-down effects of ecstasy.

"It is not unusual for the initial euphoria after the intake of ecstasy to be overshadowed by serious anxiety and panic attacks, also known as “horror trips”. This can result in depression and suicidal thoughts. Deep depressive moods resulting in suicide or attempted suicide after a single intake, have been observed. All this is the consequence of damage to the serotonin cells in the brain, which plays such an important role in depressions."

"The rebound "low" after taking ecstasy has been linked to suicidal depression. A teenager named Dayna Moore is quoted on theMonitoring the Future Web site on the pitfalls of ecstasy rebound: "When I came down, I fell into a deep, dark hole. It was a depression I couldn't stand." Anyone with a history of mental problems would be more likely to experience this difficulty."

The one that got away ?

A man was rescued from a river in Manchester city centre early this morning.
The 21-year-old was saved from the River Medlock on Princess Street by firefighters at around 12.30am.
The casualty, who was believed to be drunk, was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary and treated for hypothermia.
It's understood he had been on a night out with friends when he got stuck in the water.
Emergency services were called after a man was heard shouting from the river, which is near the Ibis Hotel, Joshua Brooks and Lass O'Gowrie pubs.
Fire teams used a nine metre ladder to reach the casualty and he was able to climb to safety.

Last place I'd go near if I was drunk is water, and if I was with a friend who was drunk I'd try and make sure she or he got home safely and not wandering off into the night on their own ???

Another day, another incident

Man fighting for life after being rescued from city centre canal

Paramedics and firefighters pulled the casualty, in his 20s, from the Rochdale canal on Dale Street near Piccadilly Station at around 10.30pm on Sunday night.
He was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary where he's described as "critically ill".
Police have also confirmed that a second man was saved from the water. Officers are now investigating it as a possible assault and have made arrests. More on this soon

Odd that the other man who fell in made no attempt to help, but ran away.  Argues that this was two of them mugging the 25 year old, who fought back and two of them ended up in the water.....  Horrible.  I hope he recovers, not least to make sure whoever was responsible gets what they deserve.  And leaving him in there to drown, that's attempted murder in my book - even if the falling in was accidental in a scuffle.
It's nice to be important, but it's also important to be nice.
