Guy on £16,000 sleeps in his van!
« on: 18:59:01, 14/01/13 »
I was listening to BBC Five/Live last night and there was a guy on (age 49) who was on £16,000 p.a. and said he couldn't afford to heat his house so he slept in his removal van!
He said it was 0 degrees in his house last night and the temperature in his van was 1 degree which went down to -1 while he was on air.  He had to move all his gear out of the van to put in his sleeping mattress etc.
He has a girlfriend but because she is on benefits he can only be with her three nights a week.  He has a ground floor one-bedroom flat.

I am astounded as I thought there were thousands of people who earned less than £16,000 p.a. and that he would at least be able to heat one room - I mean
there aren't that many people who leave their heating on all night - I certainly don't and was quite warm last night.
He also said he went to food kitchens,  students and post graduates live on less don't they?

His heating was oil fueled, and it cost £120 a month, He also said he only had one light bulb in his flat, and he had to move it about!
Surly it would have been cheaper to get an electric heater and move that about?
What amazed me was that nobody challenged him.
And yes, there are loads of people having to manage on a lot less. And I'm one of them!

I'm glad someone else heard him Jim, I'd forgotten about the one light bulb and the oil-fired heating.
Yes, I think he could have moved a Halogen heater around, put more clothes on, piled blankets on his bed

Stephen Nolan usually ask those sort of questions, I was left wondering where all his money went to ???

Probably a guy skinned alive by a vindictive ex-wife with the CSA on his back. Wouldn't expect the Beeb to delve into that though. And whats the point of having a girlfriend if she cant stretch to a few extra lightbulbs?  I'd get rid.

Five/Live is broadcast from Manchester so I would say yes as he wouldn't be able to afford the call otherwise, he was on for at least 15 minutes

Possible,  if 49 year olds do that sort of thing  :-\ if so, he was keeping someone else off the line who wanted to air their grievance

If it was a late night phone-in show, chances are the dude was drinking and winding them up. I refuse to believe anyone goes around swapping in and out their only lightbulb. If they can afford a 15 min fone call..they can afford a lightbulb.

Late night phone-in shows are notorious for attracting wind-up merchants, cranks & loonies. The presenters usually so bored they'll buy into any old nonsense for broadcast. Anythings better than 'dead air' and all that.

Very true.  When I used to work regular night shifts years ago, there was always someone on the radio coming out with stories not too dissimilar to this one.  Normally on local radio stations as well.
