Black & Tan - new book by Cheethamgirl
« on: 17:35:16, 09/03/13 »
Hi chums,

Apologies for my absence. Been hibernating and writing/publishing my latest novel.
'Running with Crows - The Life and Death of a Black & Tan' by DJ Kelly is available on Amazon in paperback and kindle versions.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Running-Crows-Life-Death-Black/dp/1782991867/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362850061&sr=8-1

William Mitchell was a Black & Tan, and was in fact the only member of the British Crown Forces to be hanged for murder during the Irish War of Independence.  Few of the books about the conflict make mention of him and those which do describe him as 'English' or simply say 'no papers exist'.  In truth finding the official case papers and even confirming his precise identity and antecedents was difficult in the extreme.  However, two years of painstaking research, a lot of help from my cousins and some good luck too, have enabled me to piece together the true and hitherto untold story of his life and his untimely death.  Hanged on 7 June 1921 for the murder of a magistrate in County Wicklow, the unfortunate constable Mitchell left behind a destitute 23 year old widow and a seven week old baby daughter he would never see grow up.   The big question is, did he actually commit the murder for which he was hanged?  Well, that is in some doubt.  My novel reveals why.

Please do have a look at a short but haunting (1:58 min) video trailer about my book:-

You can also read Mitchell's last thoughts from the condemned cell on his (posthumous) Facebook page - search 'Black & Tan'
You can read an excerpt from the book either at Amazon.co.uk or come visit my website: http://www.djkelly.co.uk

Hi again Migky,
Thanks mucho.  My old visog is plastered on several sites these days so it seemed daft to be hiding behind an avatar here amongst my Mankie pals.  Funny though, each time I glance at that photo, I could swear it's my Mum!
Anyway, do visit my website if you are totally bored: www.djkelly.co.uk as you can read excerpts of my 2 novels (try before you buy). Running with Crows is a fairly substantial book, with a couple of illustrations (of Mitchell, the crime location, etc) and I'm really pleased with the cover.  My cover designer is a talented Cambridge student and she has done me proud on 4 books so far.
I'm hoping to get an 'author gig' later in the year in Manchester, possibly at the Irish World Heritage Centre, which is just a short distance from my childhood home.  Regards to all.

I think a Pakistani or African center would be more fitting for cheetham hill in this day and age.

I think the Irish center will be nothing more than a fancy bar with top notch prices.

Not been there yet Migky but looking forward to.  Wasn't it built on the site of the old Queen's Rd bus garage (or maybe that was an earlier centre)? It'd be ironic, as my mum was for a time in the 1940s a clippy working out of that bus garage.

No the old Irish center is down at the bottom of queens road, where the old bus terminal use to be.
The new heritage / Irish center is 3/4 the way up queens  road on the right hand side where the tip use to be years ago. Look on Google earth , go to street view

I see it's near Irish Town Way. Is there an Irish Town (or is one planned)? I've been to Irishtown in Gibraltar.  O0

As far as i know it is just the name of the road but it will incorporate sports fields/pitches , so maybe that's the reason for them name of the road. I will see if i can check what is planned for the area ?
