Many thanks Hideaway69.  I just watched this through.  I had no idea how the Irish community had taken off since I left the area.  I see there's a Cheetham Festival now, and a Levenshulme Festival etc.  When I lived in Cheetham, I always had the impression the Irish were a minority community, especially as most of our neighbours were Jewish, mainly Russian emigres.  My late Mum and Dad would have loved the Irish World Heritage Centre.  They'd have been there all the time, dancing and enjoying the craic.

Took a trip down to the new Irish World heritage center this today and asked if we could take a look round. A very nice gentlemen who was a member of the committee took me round everywhere and explained what had been done so far and was as still to be built.
The center opened in January   this years. The Irish government had allocated 2.5 million pound towards the building work. The old heritage center was sold for a further 2 million pounds. Manchester city council put in half a million pounds towards the education center. This is phase one There are in the process of putting 5 & 7 a side football pitches on the site. There is a conference room, education room, a temp theatre, they are in the process of fitting out the restaurant. There is a lift and full access for the disabled. The views from the bar & up stairs restaurant are stunning  like looking over the city. At night time when the city is lit up should be something ells.  Phase two, is to have more building added to the building and move things about. All the wood came from Ireland as did all the stone for the perimitor walls.  There is to be a hotel built at the from at the corner of Irish town way & queens road. By mid to late July, a new tram station will be built more or less next to the center( this will benefit me and saves arguing  who is going to drive). So all in all Barney's old tip is now looking great. I would encourage people to go and take a look, i am told they are booked up for few years to come for weddings. Think that's about as much as i can remember as i was just amazed with the whole place and how much has been achived in a short time.

Did you put in a good word for me for an author event? Their Arts & Culture officer hasn't replied as yet, but I'm hopeful.  It does indeed look to be a brilliant centre.  I wonder if they'll call the tram stop 'Irishtown'.  That would be most appropriate, wouldn't it?
