City 'pressures Russia' over gay law

Manchester City Council will use its links with St Petersburg to pressure Russia to reconsider a law banning the promotion of "non-traditional values".

They are objecting to a law in the former USSR about children not being allowed to see homosexual material.

What the efeing does it have to do with them any way?

MCC is not an international organisation it's soul purpose is to look after the people of manchester.

Homosexual material for children by manchester city council

I to do not want my child to see homosexual material or any material about sexuality to children.
Well done Russia

Could it have anything to do with the fact that one of our most senior and most vocal Councillors Is Gay?  :-\

I wonder if the council would like to wright Robert Mugabe and ask him to make sure all
Gay literature is freely available to kids ?

Or how about homosexuals from the city being sent to Afghanistan to teach the kids there that gay books are good for them.

In fact we could send the council themselves in person.

Why do people go off on one about this sort of thing?  They start ranting as if it's a choice between having the law or having every child immediately brainwashed into homosexuality....  it's ridiculous.  If the law's not passed, nothing happens - things remain the same as today.

Always some one wants to defend the twisted views of the council.
The tax payers of Manchester gay or not pay for.
The council represents us not the people of Russia .
We have no right to interfere in there politics and they have no right to interfere
In Manchester city council issues.

This just highlights the absolute detachment the council with its easy ride into power has from the majority of people they represent.
It matters not if the law is passed it's not an issue that should concern Manchester city council.

I totally support you Julie, my stance was with the council trying to pressure a country into changing its laws, just thought it was a tad incongruous

Fair point, Celeste, but when you see someone doing something wrong, something that has no benefit, but merely legitimises idiotic prejudice and gives haters the opportunity to hurt people simply because they don't approve of their choices, you should speak up.  Politely, as MCC has done.

I fail to see the burden that polite request places on the residents of Manchester or the need for outrage over it from the usual quarters.  What exactly are the costs to the taxpayers?  Tea and biscuits for an extra meeting?  A few hours admin time?  Postage to Russia?     ::)

Because that wouldn't have moved Russia one inch.  It's the public approach from a major city with a well-integrated gay community that might just make them pause for thought.  Personally, I doubt it will make any difference, but given that so many of the city's taxpayers are gay or tolerant, and so few are homophobic to the point of wanting to lock people up just for being gay, I suspect the shouters are in the minority.  ;)
