  • Sir Alex Ferguson, while he was Manchester United manager, imposed bans on several journalists including, for seven years, the BBC
  • More recently some other clubs, including Southampton, have restricted media access

  • That one was a personal tantrum cos they broadcast something about allegations over his son.  As I recall, the Beeb did a factual prog and nobody was out to do a hatchet job, but Fergie felt that he should be able to ban them from talking about his family at all.  He got fined by the FA for it, I think?

The FA does force managers to comply with guidelines that are based on how much money people like Sky put in the pot.  Perhaps that's created resentment, so they don't do anything they don't have to?  Seems a bit silly to alienate local support though.

Has no one been reading the news lately about phone hacking!
Would you allow a reporter into your home?

No, but I think they have ways and means other than that, like seeking you out and getting you into conversation and you think you are speaking to an ordinary member of the public, sharing views, then realise later you have been taken in - I can understand that happening.

It doesn't seem terribly logical to ban and offend the Press if you're in the public eye. I think they are a pack of hyenas and wouldn't tell them the time of day, BUT I will never need their goodwill after I lose three matches in a row or increase the price of season tickets......  My tactic as a team manager would be to provide a soundproofed Press Box, lots of booze and keep them happily shut in there during visits!  ;D
