Adsum is inspired and despondent in equal measures. :D  :(  Hopefully if we get any snow I shall try to capture a snowflake. However don't hold your collective breaths.  ;)

I meant inspired to buy a new camera set-up!   ;D  I can only admire those snowflake pics - I know there isn't one chance in a million I will ever achieve anything so incredible with a camera.  :-\

I need a new camera so much it makes my teeth hurt. However I have been on a bit of a mad spending spree this week so I shall have to curb my spending instincts for a week or three. What on earth possessed me to purchase TWO 25 kilo bags of bird seed?  I only have a small bird table.  ::) I don't know about banning internet porn, they should ban people like me from internet shopping.

I took these two pictures of the same flower with my current camera . I NEED a better camera to get even closer.  :(

Judging by those photos - and previous ones - you could easily have been a professional photographer

Love this poem by John Betjeman -  Christmas

The bells of waiting Advent ring,
The Tortoise stove is lit again
And lamp-oil light across the night
Has caught the streaks of winter rain
In many a stained-glass window sheen
From Crimson Lake to Hookers Green.

The holly in the windy hedge
And round the Manor House the yew
Will soon be stripped to deck the ledge,
The altar, font and arch and pew,
So that the villagers can say
'The church looks nice' on Christmas Day.

Provincial Public Houses blaze,
Corporation tramcars clang,
On lighted tenements I gaze,
Where paper decorations hang,
And bunting in the red Town Hall
Says 'Merry Christmas to you all'.

And London shops on Christmas Eve
Are strung with silver bells and flowers
As hurrying clerks the City leave
To pigeon-haunted classic towers,
And marbled clouds go scudding by
The many-steepled London sky.

And girls in slacks remember Dad,
And oafish louts remember Mum,
And sleepless children's hearts are glad.
And Christmas-morning bells say 'Come!'
Even to shining ones who dwell
Safe in the Dorchester Hotel.

And is it true,
This most tremendous tale of all,
Seen in a stained-glass window's hue,
A Baby in an ox's stall ?
The Maker of the stars and sea
Become a Child on earth for me ?

And is it true ? For if it is,
No loving fingers tying strings
Around those tissued fripperies,
The sweet and silly Christmas things,
Bath salts and inexpensive scent
And hideous tie so kindly meant,

No love that in a family dwells,
No carolling in frosty air,
Nor all the steeple-shaking bells
Can with this single Truth compare -
That God was man in Palestine
And lives today in Bread and Wine.

All that's necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing

Adsum, if you can't use the seed, give it to the local primary school or a nursery - they will use it.  Whatever you do, keep it in a sealed and preferably metal bin or you'll have mice up to your eyebrows by Christmas Day....

Why don't you ask all your gift-buying bods to stop giving you ugly socks and chip in on the new camera?  They'd probably be dead pleased.

I shall solve the problem of the seed by spreading it liberally all over the garden a couple of times per day. I do get lots of birds of the common and garden variety, and now the pigeons have told all their mates I get a fair few of them arriving in droves.

With regards to the camera. The one I've got my eye on costs in the region of a thousand quid, and that's just with an ordinary couple of lenses. Similar in fact to one I sold a couple of years ago when I decided I didn't want to lug a big bag of equipment around with me.  ::) I think my kids and grandkids  would pass out if I told them to cough up that kind of money. Half of them only get a couple of quid spends per week, and I give them that.  ;D

P.S. Don't tell anybody but I already have the mice. They climb up things in the shed and gnaw holes in the seed bags. When my dear wife is out I lay little trails of seeds outside the shed and wait with my camera poised for when they come out to eat it. It gives Alfie something to bark furiously at, and gives me the chance to photograph them. I think I put some pics of them on here some time ago.  :D

Thank you for the compliment Celeste. Alas I know they are not good enough to pass muster with a decent photographer. They may look okay to the untrained eye, (No dig intended), but I can see all the flaws in 99% of the pictures I take.  :-[

I bought some wildlife seed from The Works, I put it into a bowl - to avoid the birds being preyed on by the cats - and it has sprouted grass which is now overflowing :-\

Watch what's growing - most mixes have hemp seed in there.   :D

Adsum, mice wee as they go along and if you let them in the seed bags, both you and the birds will get nasty germs.  They will also breed in your shed if there's a food supply there.   Get yourself an old fashioned metal dustbin with a clip on lid.  I adore the field mice I get visiting my garden, but I don't want them establishing a colony!    Hope your wife doesn't read this Forum..... :o

My wife hasn't spoken to me for years. If it wasn't for the mice and Alfie I would have no friends.  :( :( :(

They DO breed. I found a couple of dead ones in the shed last year after I took steps to secure the seeds out of their reach.

My shed is so full there is no room for a large bin, I have one large bag of seed in my room and I have redistributed the other bag into various plastic containers with clip on lids, which are kept on shelves in the shed.

As a little aside. When I was an electrician at the Manchester abattoir many years ago I was required with an engineer to work one week in three on nights in case there was a machine break down. We used to sleep on the work bench if things were quiet. Every night we would be woken up by some of the many thousands of mice who inhabit these places crawling inside our shirts and over our bodies. We always took the precaution of tying our trouser bottoms tight with string to prevent them crawling up our legs and attacking our nether regions,  ;D
