(c/f from Adsum's post)

Arrest over men's canal plunge in Dale Street, ManchesterA teenager has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two men fell into a Manchester canal.

One man, 25, is critically ill in Manchester Royal Infirmary after he was pulled out of the canal by the emergency services on Sunday evening.

A second man managed to pull himself out of the canal, in Dale Street in the city's Northern Quarter, himself and ran away.

He then collapsed and was then taken to hospital where he was later discharged.

The 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and attempted murder.

Oh.  Do you know it never occurred to me the man left in the water might be an attacker and not a victim.  I assumed the bloke who got out ran off because he was a miscreant, not because he was afraid for his life.

I hesitate to say anyone deserves the experience, but it's fair to say he brought it on himself.  I hope he recovers anyway, but my sympathy levels have dropped through the floor!
It's nice to be important, but it's also important to be nice.

This is the place I mentioned in the previous "young men going missing" thread. Coincidentally it's where the man was mugged and the muggers fell into the canal the other day........  ::)

I explored the Undercroft when I was on my City Heritage tour training course. It's not a place for the faint hearted.  :o

I thought I recognized it from your picture - I'd be interested to know when the real victim has recovered, where he met the muggers and how they ended up near a canal

Far be it from me to speculate, BUT. when I used to drive a cab, Ducie St which is the street opposite ToysRus/Argos etc. down to Piccadilly station where the men were found in the canal used to be lined with rent boys and men looking for sex. In the early morning it was rare to drive along there and not see any men having sex. It was a common sight.

Each to his/her own Celeste. It's only like a man going with a prostitute and having sex on a piece of spare land. A lot of these men are desperately lonely. It's never been to my taste, but after years of driving a cab I became unshockable. I could never condemn anybody for their choice of lifestyle. There is a whole world out there that most people fortunately never get to see.

I  don't judge what others do, that is just my personal opinion, there are a lot of lonely people in the world who wouldn't lower their standards but just maybe they are more particular about what and who they share their bodies with

Hmmm. Instant Karma? Whatever. It's still a tragedy. I am only surprised knowing the place and what goes on there, that this hasn't happened more often. It's like a massive underground cavern of iniquity below Dale St. I hope the police manage to get the place sealed off.

Manchester gay cruising canal site safety fearsRochdale Canal at Dale Street A 25-year-old fell in the canal near Dale Street in Manchester city centre
Safety measures will be considered for a gay cruising area near a canal in Manchester city centre after a man died when he fell into the water.

Police, Manchester City Council and Manchester and Pennine Waterways are considering gating off the Dale Street area known as the Undercroft.

It was prompted by the death of a man on Tuesday who had been involved in an assault on the Rochdale Canal.

The Lesbian and Gay Foundation says closing off the area is not a solution.

Stefanie Hartley, community safety office for the group, said: "It's a well established cruising area, it has been for many years.

"Obviously there's a risk that people are going down there to engage in sex and sex acts and they are being exploited and attacked in other ways.

"By closing off that area and gating it off completely, I would worry those activities are just going to move elsewhere."

'Army of police'

A man who was beaten and allegedly subjected to homophobic abuse warned gay people not to use that area.

Tony, who would not give his full name, said: "Gay men like me who frequent the area should stop using it.

"People are aware of what goes on down there but people take no notice. You could send an army of police down there, it will not stop them."

This year, there have been two deaths in canals in the city centre. This follows three fatalities in 2013 around the same area, police said.

Inspector Phil Spurgeon, from the Gay Village neighbourhood policing team, said: "The reality is when you have a busy city, a vibrant night time economy, you have 500 licensed premises in 2.2 square miles, you put a big canal system through the middle of that and you are going to end up with some fatalities, which is dreadful."

David Baldacchino, of Manchester and Pennine Waterways, added: "I look after over 200 miles of the canals and most of that has a pretty good safety record.

"There is this one area in Manchester which is earning a reputation, which is not what we would want."
