Murderer Paul Maxwell absconds on visit to Rochdale.

Paul Maxwell was jailed in 1996 for murdering an 85-year-old man in Wakefield
A convicted killer is on the run after absconding while on day release from jail in Greater Manchester.

Paul Maxwell, 49, who is thought to have been serving his sentence at HMP Buckley Hall, disappeared while visiting Rochdale on Friday.

He was jailed for life in 1996 for the murder and robbery of 85-year-old Joe Smales in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

Police have no evidence Maxwell is a threat but warned he could get desperate if he runs out of money.

Det Supt Jon Chadwick, of Greater Manchester Police (GMP), said: "It has now been more than 24 hours since Maxwell has absconded and our inquiries to trace him are ongoing.

"We are pursuing a number of leads and we will continue to explore every possible avenue in finding him.

"Because Maxwell may have limited access to money, he may surface in the areas he is known to have links to, so I would urge people to be on their guard and if you see this man, please do not approach him but call police immediately."

He added: "It is important we warn people that Maxwell is still at large and ask that people are particularly vigilant at this time, particularly if you are or know an elderly person.

Maxwell has links with Denton, Rochdale, Middleton and areas of West Yorkshire.

Maxwell was last seen wearing blue jeans, a grey fleece top and white training shoes. He was also wearing a deerstalker hat.

Visiting Rochdale?  Did they just let him pop out for a wander at random or are they organising coach trips for murderers now?  Either he's safe to be let out OR he's a potential risk - there's no overlap.
It's nice to be important, but it's also important to be nice.

I believe tags can be removed quite easily though I doubt he had one, it's just putting the public at risk and I read there are others who have absconded - someone's judgement needs looking at, more so as there is a panel who decide isn't there?

I assume he was coming to the end of his sentence and was on day release to get used to the outside world again - jailed in 1996 means he is in his 18th year of a sentence.  That's a long time for one murder these days.

I just don't get the part where one minute they are fine letting him pop down to M&S and the next minute they are telling old people there's a risk now he's out.  Does nobody think "What if he hops it?" before handing him his bus fare?   ::)

If he was coming to the end of his sentence why risk adding to it by absconding, I think there are a lot of criminals running about who have got loose, there were statistics in the papers not too long ago

This kind of thing never happened when we had the Death penalty.

It shouldn't happen nowadays - life should mean life - they shouldn't be let out at all

Buckley Hall, one of four prisons contracted out by the Government to be run by private companies.  Used to be run by G4, who lost the contract.  New lot no better then?  ::)

That's him back inside for a good bit longer, anyway.   O0

Doesn't sound like a planned escape, does it?  I can't imagine what you'd do with no money and having not been out and about for the previous 18 years.    He's probably quite glad to get back into the warm and get a decent meal....  Was it Rose West the other day said she likes prison life so much she never wants to leave?  Wish granted as far as I'm concerned!

That's putting it politely.  Things she did to her kids, she shouldn't be enjoying The Archers and a nice comfy bed.

Latest reports say he has been denied new Play station. Using an older model Play station is not considered torture. In this country he would have probably been given the new games console and awarded compensation for hurt feelings.  ::)

Good-oh. I have no issue with his hunger strike.  I believe that a man as fine as Anders should be fully entitled to the right to starve himself to a slow and painful death.
