BHF find £1,000 in dressing table drawer

£1,000 found in BHF charity shop dressing table in SaleGareth Green Gareth Green says volunteers are "always looking for little gems"
A volunteer has said finding £1,000 stashed in the drawer of a donated dressing table at a Greater Manchester charity shop was "startling".

Gareth Green found the money while preparing the table, which had been brought in with other items from a house clearance, for sale in Sale's British Heart Foundation (BHF) shop.

He said the money was hidden in the lining of the drawer.

The cash was returned to the solicitor who organised the house clearance.

Mr Green said the store received up to 300 items a week and that it was common practice to check each one.

"I was preparing the dressing table for sale and I opened one of the drawers and underneath the lining was an envelope with £1,000 in £20 notes in it," he said.

"We always check things over, looking for little gems - and this was a massive gem.

"It's something you don't see every day - £2 coins, 50ps and 2ps are more common, but £1,000 was a startling find."

The cash was returned, as although the furniture was left to the shop by its owner in her will, her money had been bequeathed to a different charity.

Two vans of furniture and other items were donated, which the BHF said could raise up to £2,000.

It just goes to show it's always wise to check your handbags and your drawers before you throw anything out

In the days when most men wore suits to go on a night out, if I was short of cash in the week I would always check my suit pockets, particularly my top pocket. It was uncanny how often I would find a fiver or tenner tucked into my top breast pocket.  ;D

My Dad discovered many years ago that his mother kept thousands of pounds in cash sewn into the deep hems of her long living room curtains.....

He wondered why the bottoms of the curtains were all fat and lumpy.

They were long, heavy brocade curtains across a window and a set of doors out to the garden.  Massive deep hems - you couldn't tell at all.  It came up in a random conversation about what you'd save in a fire.  Gran picked the living room curtains, which led to the obvious question from Dad.  He marched her and her notes down to the Building Society.  We're going back to the 70s, when you could buy a house for a couple of thousand quid, and she had something ridiculous like £8000 sewn into the curtains.  I don't think she had even turned 60 either.

I often think when programmes like "Flog It" are on T.V and people get a good price for something bought from a charity shop for very little, that if it were me I would have to give at least half back to the charity.                                                                                              ,              I`d not live with myself otherwise. Car boot sales are different-- the vendors ought to do more research. They take their chance.
It also annoys me when dealers  swoop on charity shops and church jumble sales and strip them. Our church sells many good books for very modest prices., like 50p. A local dealer at an antiques emporium buys ever so many and sells them at £5-00 I think that is 900 % profit. Different customers you see. People who buy from an antique dealer would not be seen dead  at a church jumble sale.More fool them. Joynson.

Well Joynson it has crossed my mind too :-\

At the church 'good as new' I've known dealers to come in very early and walk out with boxes full of stuff, probably to be sold at car boots, sometimes the church helpers are glad to get rid of the items as they can be there for weeks.

It's true about the books, I've stopped bringing books to the church as the guy who's in charge runs a business on the side, as does his daughter.   I put them in the charity bags.

Had a good clean out last week and got the man from the Op shop to come and collect the pile. .Among  the collection
was a Silver plated Candalabra, black from sitting up in the high cupboard,  told him to get it cleaned and might get a few extra bob for it.A fair bit of crockery ,bo oks and some clothes from out the wardrobe ,they  cou ld be hung up at once cos were clean

Am slowly going thro all my cupboards and sortinout keep a bit longer or get rid of, will save Lesley the job
when I pop my clogs. .A m also giving friends small items  like vases, and ornaments to clear china cabinet.

I`m not very good at being ruthless and throwing away but I`ve got to start.
It is sentiment of course which makes us hang on to things, like my auntie`s little scent bottle. She was the quiet gentle one in a boisterous family and everyone`s favourite .She made a disastrous marriage and died a horrible death from T.B.
My mum treasured the little bottle, it takes up so little room, has no monetary value but will get chucked out when I pop my clogs--even if I attach a note explaining why it has been treasured from 1929! I ought to do it myself but truly can`t.
Oh heck! I can hear my daughter now( she who chucks birthday cards out two days after the event). One son will be sentimntal the other non commital . I keep telling my grandchildren family stories and try to give details on the family tree I never seem to finish.
It is sad to me that these people , long dead and who yet were real to me through the vivid stories my parents told should finally be lost to all memory.
I`m right sad now, going for a cuppa and a kit kat. Cheerio. Joynson :(

I've no kids.  I daresay pretty much all the things I treasure will end up in the charity shop or in a skip.   Cheery thought for a rainy Monday morning.....  :-\
