Pop music Rock music
« on: 21:24:21, 11/06/07 »
Why is Pop and Rock music, especially in Industrial Towns like Manchester and Liverpool, so much more important to our cultural identity than is the case for our Continental  Cousins ??
There seems no difficulty in seeing the link between America in the 1950's and Britain in the 1960's in terms of bands here taking up the challenge with a notable feature of serious songwriting as an important narrative element going forward beyond either the sugary repetition of lightweight pop or the linguistic limitations of basic Rock and Roll
Musically minded people will no doubt be better able to understand what happened in terms of the guitars and drum arrangements likewise fighting for success...
Perhaps also we have many more clubs and venues for young bands to play at in Britain!!

Or, is it just that the English language is better able to express the vibrant 'message' when married to skilfully 'choreographed' instruments ?

didn't the whole soul and R & B  stuff start in America, brought there by generations of immigrants, and adopted by the white Americans with the influence passing to the British, then evolving into rock 'n roll - Bill Haley and Elvis, I think we have been musically influenced by the Americans, their film industry, Sinatra, Ella, and in the sixties Tamla Motown, the only time we seem to have influenced them is when the Beatles and the Liverpool Sound became predominant in the swinging sixties, since then the arena has  been anyones, perhaps more individual artists coming to the fore but there are still many groups that are popular.

I do think that the lyrics and sound suit the English language best too.

there will always be rebels won't they, but to be different in the way you dress or wear your hair is superficial,  but to be different, or original in your head is awesome

the ones I can think of are the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix off the top of my head, I'll let you know of others when they spring to mind, Morrissey and the Smiths, - Oh Lord I'm Miserable Now - some of the titles of his songs were very odd to say the least, Madonna - although she was very influenced by film personalities, her music is definitely her own, Freddie Mercury/Queen

Actually they were very good....but I told you about it at the time I think.
We don't get much opportunity down here to see anyone.....and the tickets were FREE!! ;)
